Sophisticated and Practical Design for a Clapham Common Terrace Home

A sophisticated living space where dark tones meet warm textures.

My clients had recently purchased a beautifully renovated terrace house in Clapham Common. They loved the bold, dark wall colours used throughout the first floor and basement but needed furniture, lighting, and soft furnishings that would suit both family life and entertaining. Storage was also a key priority to keep the space organised and practical.

To bring everything together, I developed a cohesive design concept that included the living room as a central feature. In this space, the deep blue walls create a bold yet inviting backdrop, enhancing the warmth of the leather sofa, wooden accents, and the soft glow of the gold chandelier. I added bespoke, full-length curtains made from a fabric that balanced the dark walls and white shutters, softening the room while maintaining its dramatic elegance. Statement pieces were essential to complement the room's high ceilings, so I selected two striking works from Richard Heeps' Wicken collection. These artworks not only echo the room's rich colour palette but also add depth and a sense of narrative, tying the scheme together beautifully.

The design concept extended throughout the home, with a unified colour palette and carefully sourced furniture, lighting, and artwork. To meet the family’s practical needs, I designed six bespoke joinery pieces, including a bookcase, a drinks cabinet, a cloakroom, shoe storage, a large AV unit, and a multifunctional storage cupboard. Each piece was thoughtfully crafted to blend seamlessly with the existing interiors.

The result is a home that balances style and practicality effortlessly. From the elegant living room to the custom storage solutions, every element works in harmony, creating a space that feels cohesive, comfortable, and perfect for both family living and entertaining.
