Modernist Living Room, Cranleigh
This mid-century home underwent a comprehensive renovation, with a design concept that honoured its architectural roots while modernising the space to reflect the client's personal style. The concept is "Naturally Retro" - a retro nod to the architectural origin of the house. Toned down to modernise and create a relaxed space. A Mid Century modern vibe with strong elements of nature. The original stone cladding around the fireplace was removed and replaced with a striking double-height section of split-faced quartz. To create a more streamlined aesthetic, the ceiling beams were concealed, enhancing the minimalist appeal of the space.
The teak staircase and balustrades were replaced with a sleek combination of glass and oak, opening up the area and creating a greater sense of space. The flooring was selected for its light, neutral tones, which complement the warmth of wood while avoiding the yellow undertones often associated with traditional oak. The herringbone pattern not only adds a sense of timeless elegance but also introduces a dynamic texture that elevates the overall luxury feel of the space.
The furnishings were chosen to reflect a modernist style, centred around a largely monochromatic colour palette. A mix of textures and wood tones adds depth and interest, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere.
The client’s brief was to create a comfortable yet striking home for herself and her partner, with a strong sense of "wow factor". She was open to exploring a completely new design direction, distinct from her previous properties. A high-quality, luxurious finish was essential, but the client also wanted the space to stand apart from the surrounding homes. Situated in the picturesque Surrey countryside, the property needed to reflect its natural setting, and given the client’s passion for gardening and plant growing, incorporating elements of nature into the design was a key consideration. The aim was to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, while providing a sophisticated, bespoke living environment that felt both stylish and welcoming.
